Every year, tens of thousandsreturn home to Los Angeleswith little to no support.
Most face immediate barriers to housing, employment, and stability. Nearly half will be reincarcerated within three years.
Keeairra and Keefe Dashiell know this reality from lived experience. Together, the siblings from South Central Los Angeles spent over two decades incarcerated in California state prisons.
After release, they saw how few systems existed for people rebuilding their lives. Their direct support work became After Life Initiative.
Keeairra and Keefe Dashiell know this reality not from research, but from lived experience. Together, the two siblings from South Central Los Angeles spent over two decades incarcerated in California state prisons.
During her 14 years in prison, Keeairra earned two degrees, completed a paralegal certification, and facilitated more than 100 rehabilitative groups for incarcerated women. After her life sentence was vacated, she returned home, passed the California Bar in 2025, and continues advancing her work in advocacy and civil rights.
While serving 13 years, Keefe taught himself coding, earned two college degrees, and facilitated hundreds of CBT based groups with gang members, lifers, and men at the hardest end of the system. That work transformed lives, including his own — and that impact earned him a sentence commutation from the Governor of California. After his release he stepped into the tech industry, landing in Silicon Valley fintech and building features now used by millions of people.
When Keeairra and Keefe were released, they quickly realized how few support systems existed for people rebuilding their lives after incarceration. The mentorship, guidance, and practical support they began offering to others in their community eventually grew into After Life Initiative.
Today, After Life Initiative provides reentry support, rehabilitation programming, housing assistance, mentorship, and prevention services for system impacted youth and adults across Los Angeles County. Rooted in lived experience, the organization continues to support people both inside and outside prison walls as they work to rebuild stability, reconnect with their communities, and move forward after incarceration.
